IT Process Maturity Assessment

Most IT organizations can point to a process document. Far fewer can say, with confidence, that the process on paper is the process actually followed under pressure — during a P1, at month-end change freeze, or when a patch window slips. InsideOut's Process Maturity Assessment scores how your team really operates across 13 ITIL-aligned processes, not how the runbook says it should.

What is IT process maturity?

Process maturity measures how consistently, and how automatically, a discipline is actually followed — not whether a document exists describing it. A process can be beautifully written and still be Manual in practice, because nobody enforces it under time pressure.

InsideOut scores 13 core ITIL-aligned processes, including:

Incident Management
Restore normal service operation as quickly as possible after disruption
Major Incident Management
Manage high-impact incidents with dedicated response, bridge and comms
Problem Management
Identify and eliminate root causes of recurring incidents
Change Management
Control the lifecycle of changes to minimize risk and disruption
Release & Deployment Management
Plan, schedule and control the movement of releases to live environments
Request Fulfillment
Manage the lifecycle of standard service requests from the catalog
Patch Management
Identify, test and deploy patches across the estate on a defined cadence
Capacity Management
Ensure IT capacity meets current and future business demand cost-effectively
Availability Management
Define, measure and improve service uptime against agreed targets
Service Level Management
Define, track and govern SLAs/OLAs and service performance reporting
Configuration Management (CMDB)
Maintain accurate CI data and relationships across the estate
Knowledge Management (KEDB)
Capture, maintain and reuse resolution knowledge across the organization
IT Service Continuity / DR Management
Plan, test and execute recovery of services after major disruption

The four levels of process maturity

1.
Manual
Ad hoc or undocumented; depends on who's handling it.
2.
Consistent
Followed reliably, but still hands-on and person-dependent.
3.
Automated
Automated workflows and real-time reporting; the process runs itself under normal conditions.
4.
Intelligent
Predictive and self-healing; the process anticipates and prevents, not just responds.

In our experience, Change and Problem Management are where the gap between documented process and actual practice shows up most — teams that look mature on Incident response often haven't closed the loop on preventing repeat incidents.

Why self-assess instead of hiring a consultant first?

Nobody knows where your process actually breaks down better than the people running it day to day — they just haven't had a structured way to score it honestly. InsideOut turns that knowledge into a scored maturity level per process, a Gap analysis against where you want to be, and an AI-generated readout that doesn't soften bad news. If the results justify it, you can request a full InsideOut Verification — a human-led deep dive built on your actual answers.
